Stokely’s Mikey D
It may say March on the calendar but yesterday we had our biggest snowfall of the winter (about 8″) and when you put that on top of the six inches we got last weekend, it suddenly looks like winter outside. I decided yesterday to head down to the Southern New England Woodcock Championship in Rhode Island in three weeks as a tune up for Jack for the Invitational.
This trial used to be known as the Northeastern Woodcock Championship and ran Labor Day weekend. At that time it was the first trial of the season and usually drew a big entry. Two year in a row I was fortunate to have Stokely’s Mikey D take the runner-up spot. In the fall it was tough place to find a bird and the first time he placed Mikey dug out two woodcock. The second time he was birdless until late in the hour when he took a long cast onto the next course and stuck a woodcock. Jack has had some good races on these grounds and found a bird or two — hopefully he’ll have good showing this year although, if it keeps snowing he may be confused by the bare ground.
